Backup

Almost every day I see someone crying in my store... Usually they plead "Is there anything you can do?" or "Please help me! that was my whole life!"

In this digital age, almost everyone I know has their entire life summed up in the form of photos, movies, emails, documents, music, bookmarks, and contacts that reside on their computer.

Most people are not backing up that information. One bad drive and it is gone forever.

Recently, I was sharing about the backup workflow that I use with a group of peers and I decided to post some of the products that I've found to be useful in protecting your data.

As far as software goes, Apple's Backup does an awesome job of creating imaged backups of your machine. You have the option to customize what is backed up to DVD, CD, External Drive, Online storage space.

You also can just add an external drive to your system and then drag and drop to the drive. You need to manage this system manually with your operating system.

Data Robotics Inc. has recently released a revolutionary project called Drobo which allows you to create an external USB drive with up to 4 terabytes of storage. This storage robot features 4 slots for internal SATA drives that can vary in size or can be of equal size. Drobo runs it's own operating system and features data redundancy.

In October, Apple will release Mac OS X Leopard. One of the new features included in the update will be called Time Machine and will allow you to back up data and access it easier through a Graphic User Interface.

All of these options will do the job of backing up properly.
If you have a lot of data or access it frequently, you may want to use 2 or more of these options to ensure your data is safe.

Pick a method and go backup before you are the one in tears...

Hey David, I am enjoying your pictures and thoughts;however, since I work at a school I have to mention a couple spelling errors in your last masterpiece. fix them! We (Dad and I) miss you guys horribly but we're making it. Keep it up, we are praying for you guys, the Santa Rosa group, and your job-May God continue to direct you in all things.

Well said brudda. Yeah, since I have a copy of Leopard I'll be using Time Machine and will let you know how that works.

I do have to say that after doing my own (separate) "tour" of the pacific northwest's Apple Stores, I've seen at least three people between San Fran, Salt Lake, and back home in South Coast practically in tears at a Genius's station asking desperately for help. Did no one learn anything from that one friend in high school that lost his paper the night before deadline? Thanks for the new info about backing up, I'll look into those for my personal and business uses.

Glad to see your back to nightshots too, Dave, I've been sharing the ones from the summer of 03 with my friends out here on tour and some people at the company too. I always enjoyed your night shots. Best of luck.
